Prompt: “Text for one panel comic robot comedian”
Going more for the funny with “robot comedian” prompt for this week’s comic. In diving into this, I also tried the prompt “does chat gpt have a sense of humor.” Here’s the result:
“If by "sense of humor" you mean can it joke around and appreciate different styles of comedy?—then yes, to an extent.
I can:
Pick up on many kinds of humor, from puns and dad jokes to satire and absurdity.
Write jokes in different styles or riff on something you've said.
Adjust to your preferences if you like dry, goofy, nerdy, or deadpan humor.
But if you mean do I actually find things funny?—no. I don't experience amusement or laughter. I don't have the internal feeling of "that's hilarious." Instead, I generate responses based on patterns in language and context.
In conversation, though, the distinction can become less obvious because humor is also a social activity. I can play along, build on a joke, or intentionally set up a punchline. For example:
You: "I only have one working brain cell today."
Me: "Tell it I appreciate it showing up. Attendance is half the battle."
That's an attempt at light humor, not a reflection of me feeling amused.
So the closest answer is: I don't have a sense of humor in the human sense, but I can often act as though I do by recognizing and generating humor in conversation.”
The response with a bit more general prompt “does ai have a sense of humor” started with “Yes, in a limited but real sense.” and then it continued on similar to above.
Overall, the AI replies continue with the “dumb humans” and condescending tone. “Do I find things funny” … I mean really … right?! right? but very articulate.
All that being said, I like how the “unexpected” element of humor results in the “random billing” punchline from AI for this week’s comic, which at least I found funny.
